Today many diving centers around the world are regularly looking for PADI Open Water Scuba instructor and PADI Assistant Instructor. Indeed, these are certifiable and recognized qualifications, training standards for diving professionals.

PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) course is the first step of PADI Instructor training (Instructor Development Course – IDC), that you will complete with the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Diving professionals typically follow a complete IDC, and then participate in the Instructor Trainer Examination (IE), the final step to becoming a PADI Instructor Trainer.

Good to know!

If you have already an instructor certification from another recognized diver training organization, you can register directly for the OWSI program. This recognition of their prior training as an instructor is an access to become a PADI Instructor.

Registration Conditions:

To follow the PADI Assistant Instructor, you must:
Be certified PADI Divemaster for at least 6 months.
Count at least 60 dives before the training. ( 100 dives for the IE)
Be certified PADI EFR: Primary and Secondary care (Since less of 24months)
 Be certified Emergency First Response Instructor. (This level can be acquired during the training)
Supply a medical certificate ( since less 12months).

Program:

This training is a minimum of five days, but we generally prefer it to be a seven-day program. You will learn how to conduct all PADI basic courses: Organize and present theoretical informations, conduct technical development sessions and manage diving in natural environment.
You will master the oral training, and then in situation in order 
to demonstrate the exercises, while ensuring the safety of your students.
The main themes are:

  • PADI Standards and Procedures for courses you can teach with in water workshops.
  • Learning, Instruction and the PADI System.
  • Risk Management and Diver Safety.
  • The Business of Diving and your role as an instructor.
  • Marketing Diving and Sales Counseling.

If you wish to start now, register for IDC Online – PADI’s eLearning. You will study independently at your own pace. There are nine interactive knowledge development sections. Prestudy online saves classroom time, which allows more time for practicing the skills.

You can also sign up for Dive Theory Online, if you haven’t already completed it or it’s been more than a year since you went through it. The program is a straightforward review of dive physics, physiology, skills, equipment and environment, plus using the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP). By successfully completing Dive Theory Online, you can get credit for the dive theory exam requirement during your IDC.

What is the Instructor Examination (IE)?

IE is an examination program allowing to test a instructor candidate on several points:
His pedagogical skills, his theoretical knowledge, his level of diving techniques, his understanding of the PADI System, and his attitude and professionalism.

PADI IE are standardised and managed by specially trained and certified PADI examiners. The examinations take place over two days, in carefully selected environments so that the assessment of candidates is as objective and fair as possible.
Only those who meet the required skills, obtain the respected certification of PADI Instructor.
